10 Questions To Ask Your Web Agency

I put together 10 simple questions to ask your web agencies you are choosing to build your website.

If you are about to hire a web agency to create a website for your small to medium sized biz or organization here are great questions to ask them:

1. Are you going to do the work yourself? Is it being outsourced overseas?

Just check to see who is actually going to do the work, because it could be assistant to the assistant.

2. Do you know anything about online marketing? Does the work include design and copy?

Very simple question, because in today’s world you need to really know something about online marketing to build websites!

3. Are you going to be building a custom system versus WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Squarespace, Wix or Weebly?

Custom may sound cool, but for a small site it is more of a problem than an asset. 25% of the world’s websites are using WordPress for a reason.

4. How long have you been doing this?

Being younger does not make them cooler or better at making websites. If you are paying for quality, make sure you are getting it.

5. Are you part of a larger agency?

Good question to ask, because larger agencies work like web farms once again farming out your project to less qualified workers. That is how they cut their costs.

6. Do you help me get listed on Google?

If not, then just know you have to hire a marketing firm. Best to find a web shop that can take care of this for you.

7. Do you have any references?

At least several examples of sites they have recently worked on would help. Not too critical, but at least you should have some idea of what they can do.

8. What do you think the purpose of a website is? How can my website help me specifically?

Simple question. If their answer is to make a living off of clients, then you should question their capabilities. Obviously websites are built to help get clients and distribute information, sell products and other stuff.

9. Do I pay for everything up front?

No. Don’t do it. Preferred method is installment payments on a schedule. We prefer 40% upfront, 40% when the draft is delivered right before going live, and 20% after completion.

10. How do you compare price wise with other teams?

You should know what you are getting. Is the team at the bottom, top or middle. You should pay for the best. There is a reason Indian web firms are at the bottom often. It’s not for their quality of their work.
