How My 13 Year Old Asbergers Son Hit It Big At A Pandemic Art Show With Monster Drawings
About 4 weeks ago, we got an email about an art show at a local museum in Boynton Beach, Florida. The reason we took notice is they were inviting members of kids on the spectrum to show a few art pieces in that show.
Our son has been diligently doodling on paper to the toon of 100s of doodles a day for several years. He is 13, and I would compare him to any kid his age who likes to draw.
But something is different in his drawing. It may look like a child’s drawing, but it is much more.
Starting around the age of 5, in Kindergarten we had an incident (which always starts it off), where he got himself in trouble, social trouble. In fact, it was an incident where he was trying to bite all the kid's legs after the rest of his classmates set him off.
That incident lead to an evaluation, and his IEP starting in 1st grade. An IEP is an Independent Education Plan put together because of all things, No Child Left Behind legislation. It took a year to get the IEP. We had to have him evaluated by a psychiatrist and get him the official designation.
